The company’s turnover was EUR 95.6 million. Separating ship service operations into their own company is the most notable factor in the slight decrease. At the same time, productivity improved.

January

The pricing model introduced at the beginning of the year directed truck traffic to harbours outside the city centre during peak hours. Heavy traffic did not increase in the harbours of the city centre during the year, where as truck traffic in Vuosaari saw a positive change. Read more

The Port of Helsinki received the highest points in the HAZARD project assessment by the University of Turku, which graded the content and usability of ports’ websites in the EU’s Baltic Sea regions.

May

A new berth intended for large cruise ships was inaugurated in Hernesaari on May Day Eve. This offers a chance to develop even better cruise ship services and connections. Read more

June

A new upper ramp was completed at Katajanokka Terminal, which will speed up the boarding and unloading of vehicles and improve the passenger experience of people travelling with cars. Read more

A new service trial, Summer Pop-up Lounge, was implemented at West Terminal 2 in response to passenger wishes and to test whether a more exclusive waiting area would be popular. Read more

Eckerö Line’s new cargo ship, Finbo Cargo, started operating from Vuosaari Harbour. Read more

July

The Port of Helsinki and Elisa signed an agreement of providing the passengers in the West Harbour in Helsinki with suitable 5G technology. Read more

August

Once again, the Port of Helsinki held the annual Satamahulinat event in Jätkäsaari and Vuosaari Harbour Day in Vuosaari. These are fun free events for the whole family, and are intended for the local residents near the harbour areas.

September

The renewal of Katajanokka Terminal was started. Its services will be fully upgraded, its appearance and waiting areas renovated and signage improved. The renovations will be completed in sections during 2020. Read more

The first SIMOPS (simultaneous operations) ship-to-ship bunker operation in the Baltic Sea was performed in Vuosaari Harbour on 21 September, in which a ship received LNG from another vessel while it was docked and being loaded. LNG is becoming even more mainstream as a maritime fuel in Helsinki. Read more

The construction of the new cruise ship quay at Hernesaari was completed in the autumn. After the final touches, it will be opened for the use of international cruise traffic in spring 2019.

October

The West Harbour fairway was improved with smart buoys. Real-time situational data improves safety and also increases cost-efficiency and the predictability of maintenance needs. Read more

The international cruise season in Helsinki came to an end, and its passenger numbers broke the previous record; in total, we saw 605 000 cruise passengers and had 303 visits from cruise ships.

November

The labour market situation affected ships operating under the Finnish flag. Cancelled departures and general uncertainty also had a negative impact on the Port’s traffic numbers.

December

The Port of Helsinki and Clear Channel signed an agreement on an advertising partnership that covers all the terminals. Its purpose is to provide ship passengers in Helsinki with customised content and advertisers with carefully identified target groups. Read more

 

The Port increased the maximum size of the environmental discount on vessel charges granted to liner traffic vessels to 6% for 2020. The price steering of heavy traffic from the harbours in the city centre to Vuosaari will be continued. Read more
